WORKSHOP 4
EMOTIONAL & PSYCHOLOGICAL
ASPECTS OF PRISON LIFE
OVERVIEW
Workshop 4 examines the negative impact being imprisoned can have on an individual's mental health before, during, and after their time in prison
This is particularly important because the majority of the prison population struggles with mental health issues. Due to prison overpopulation, the chance of getting the right support is slim which could lead to more long-lasting issues.
Participants will understand the variety of ways in which the experience of prison impacts mental health.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following areas:
Mental health
Severe depression, fear and paranoia in prison and after release.
Suicide & self harm
Why suicide and self-harm are so common in custody.
Solitary confinement
Human rights and how solitary breaks people.
Prison psychiatry
The possibility and process of getting sectioned.
